Levitra, for example, is made by Bayer Pharmaceuticals and is still covered by most insurance plans. And generic versions of the drug sold under the brand-name Levitra are available without insurance through some discount programs. But even with insurance, many patients taking Levitra pay significantly less than patients taking the brand-name drug.
In some cases, patients may be able to get cheaper erectile dysfunction drugs, Radenow said. Some discount programs, for example, can cover the cost of Levitra or its generic equivalent, Viagra, and other drugs Radenow tested for treating erectile dysfunction. Some discount programs don’t cover Viagra or its generic equivalent, and generic versions aren’t required to be covered by insurance.
A second problem is that generic drugs can have varying levels of price. If you pay more for a drug that’s covered by insurance, you may pay less for the drug, Radenow said. And even if your cost of the drug is lower, you still pay a higher price for it, he said.
